Having lots of probs with our computers at home- we now have a new prob-our desktop computer will not connect to the internet(orange broadband) it initially states unable to display web page then when you access more details it states'Invalid ADSL unable to authenticate' we have been in touch with Orange and everything is fine with our line etc they talked by hubby through some stuff and we re-entered all the usernames and passwords as instructed but we still get the same message. Hubby has checked all our cables, phone line etc and now thinks it could be our ethernet adaptor (via rhine II fast ethernet adaptor) does this seem probable or does anyone else have any other ideas? He would normally trawl through the internet to find the answer but of course he can't, I have access at work but don't really know what I am on about??? All help appreciated.

Well we could do with knowing if you are connected to a router or if you are connected straight to your modem box. Then also tell us your browser. If it is IE (Internet Explorer) 6 or 7 go to tools then Internet options then connections and press LAN setup button. Then tick the top box (automatically detect setting), but this only applies if you are connected via a router. Also if you are connected by a router try going to my network places then press set up a home or small office network. Go through the steps and when you get to the last page just press finish i do not want to do this on any other computers (something along them lines). Tell me how it goes and I will try find some information.

If your not connected by a router then try open CMD prompt by going to start then all programs then accessories then command prompt. Once command prompt opens type ipconfig and see if you have a IP address and a default gateway. If yes for both then your internet should be working but if yes for one (IP) and no for the other (gateway) then type ipconfig /release followe by /ipconfig renew. Try them and see if you get a default gateway. If not i suggest you connect to your modem if you can via a browser by typing 192.168.100.1 (or something along them lines) and rebooting your modem using the webpage. I hope this helps.

Cheers Alienuk I've printed your response off and will take it home for 'im indoors. I'm not 100% sure which IE we're using but I think it is 7, It will be tomorrow when I get back on here when I'm on my teabreak at work. We do have a wireless home network and we connect via a router but we do have our old modem kicking about somewhere. Thanks
Ok, also try both anyways even though your on a router. The command promp part might work still. Also try connecting directly to your modem just to see if its working. At least then if it works you get the internet and can search yourself. Hope this also helps.
If you have an antivirus installed and running thats whats causing it.
Just configure your antivirus to allow traffic from the internet.
I use AVG and when i first set it up with broadband my broadband stopped working.
Do this test first. Open up command prompt, (type CMD into run) then type in without ", "ping www.google.co.uk"
Press enter. If it says that all packets were recieved, that means that the router has connected to the server but your antivirus is preventing the browser from doing the same. If not change the website to somthing else and have another try. If still no response that will confirm that it is a problem with the connections. In that case follow Alienuks suggestion.

Thanks for the replies.My hubby did as Alienuk suggested but still got problems, we can connect to tiscali (not our provider)through the computers onboard modem-obviously very slow as only 56k. We connected up our old speedtouch modem-pre livebox/router-and still could not connect, everything is fine until it comes to the user name, phone number and password which it states is invalid?? We have had the same details for the past 7 years, Orange has never liked our phone number because it is a cable number which we transferred to BT. I would have thought that Orange could just give us a new account/details but they didn't seem keen to do this.Hubby is now wondering if someone could have hacked into our system and is using our details which is overriding our attempts to connect??
Very possible that someone has hyjacxked your account. I don't mean to scare you but i could grab your account with your ip and a few bits of software whitch i have.
Thats how easy it is for them.
Close your existing account with orange and open a new account keeping the same phone number as before.
The hackers will find it harder to get at your system with just a phone number that works.
And remember, never bank online!
It is possible that you may have been hacked/hyjacked but i doubt it. Most hackers have a reason to hack a certain computer. It is unlikely a hacker just found your ip by chance. I think it is the set up details, try uppercase and lowercase and different combinations. Maybe crossroads is right but still try different combinations. Hope this helps.
