Spot on Flea Treatments for Cats

Following on from wiggal's question it's got me thinking. I use a spot on combined flea and wormer treatment for my cat called Advocate which I get from the vets. My cat absolutely hates it - it makes the fur on the back of his neck go kind of greasy and spiky for a couple of days and he won't let me touch him for a while after I've put it on but that could just be because he's p***ed off with me!! He's certainly never had any bad physical reaction to it, it just puts him in a bad mood for a couple of days but now I'm worried that maybe I should use something else. Any suggestions or thoughts appreciated. I will be taking him to the vet in September for his booster jabs so will talk to him then but in the meantime any advice would be appreciated.

as far as I am aware Advocate is fine as it is a prescription only medication. Its the bob martin spot on that has had some bad press, in fact historically anything you could buy over the counter in the local pet store was not worth the money - but I notice one of the larger pet stores is now selling frontline spot on, but that is purely for fleas and not a combined wormer. Frontline combo is for pets and house (I think?!) and is prescription only.
