I'd check this out very carefully as there have been quite a few oil workers kidnapped in Nigeria very recently. Have a look at this on the Foreign Office website http://www.fco.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagename=O penMarket/Xcelerate/ShowPage&c=Page&cid=100702 9390590&a=KCountryAdvice&aid=1013618386298
Avoid it like the plague! Why do you suppose your job offer is 'very good' - it's because they have to offer high pay to entice people to go there. Very many ex-pats employed in Nigerea only stay there because otherwise they'd be out of work.
Hmmm, i dont know anything specific about the Shell compounds in Nigeria, however I would say that care needs to be taken if you are travelling to any foreign country. Yes, I know that in the news recently there have been kidnaps, however people should look at the bigger picture - there are kidnaps in england.

if your serious about the job offer, you need to do lots of research into the area and the job itself - no where is completely say, but if you employ common sense and lots of research, there isnt anything else you can do to make yourself anymore safe!

I know friends who have visited Nigeria and know a number of Nigerians, the culture, food, and friendliness of the natives is overwelming, they are so welcoming and the experience would be wonderful.

Good luck :)
Shell look after their workers very well & your accomodation etc will be first class, go for it.
If I had taken others advice I would never have gone to the Middle East & I lived their for 14 years.
Sometimes you just have to take chances, if you do not go you will never know, just keep your home in the UK until you save enough Shell money to buy a better one.
Good Luck.
Did you take up the job offer?
