Question Author
its not what comes off british farms we need to worry about its what diseases are being imported on a daily basis - cheap meat in burgers, pies etc mostly come from countries which we know have uncontrolled cases of foot and mouth and tb.
What has been learnt? Errrr.....

Routine testing for F&M that enables....

Rapid identification and quarantine of a suspected outbreak, and...

The immediate meeting of COBRA to implement further plans to monitor the containment and spread of any outbreak.

What have YOU learnt since the last outbreak? Apart from being panicked by newspaper headlines and blaming it on 'foreign' meat?
The 2001 epidemic had 2000 confirmed cases and cost the UK 8bn. Let's hope the lesson have been learned.

There were 3 inquiries into 2001 outbreak
"All three inquiries reported their findings to the public. However, the inquiries themselves took place in private. The lack of a full public inquiry into the crisis caused a group of farmers, business leaders and media organisations to lodge an appeal at the High Court against the government's decision not to hold such an inquiry. Margaret Beckett, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, had ruled out a public inquiry on the grounds that it would be too costly and take too long. After a four-day hearing, the court sided with Beckett and the Government."
why is it always someone's fault?

You have a very capable system, that (as stated by brachiopod) finds the diesase as soon as it starts, keeps it at bay through quarantine and cull, and ensures that no-one else is infected.

Seems the lessons were learned well.
why is it always someone's fault?

I now turns out the strain is from the nearby laboratory, and is down to a breach of bio-security. I say, it's their fault.
Defra isn't actually saying it got out of the lab. But it sounds suspicious. I blame all these early release schemes. When a virus is locked up, life should mean life.
How farmers can get even more compensation !!

I loathe farmers and their constant complaining........
