I remember a character of that name in either The Beano or The Dandy (can't remember which at this distance!) in the 50s, but whether he was the original or not I couldn't say.
A greedy character who always loved to eat, first appeared in The Dandy, 1930s. Reappeared in Sparky 1970s, Topper 1980s. The Sparky version had a lot more hair than the Dandy version.
As I remember Horace from the 50s, he was much chubbier than that Johnny-come-lately from the 70s and had fair - or at least paper-coloured! - curly hair. I'm not surprised that he originated in the 30s; a lot of the characters in comics in the 50s were of pre-war origin. I suspect that Keyhole Kate was of similar vintage.......
Slangs were created in the names of classic writers.
