whats the best way to load a line on a reel

More easy with 2 people, old dad would get me to hold the new reel of line in one hand with a pencil through the centre and let the line run through the finger and thumb of my other hand just to keep a little tension on it so it winds on the spall nice and neat as he reeled it in slow and steady.
