male dog not interested in mating

We are trying to mate our 7 year old chocolate lab. The female is flagging and ready, but our male doesn't seem to know what to do. We've never bred him before. He seems interested by sniffing and licking her, but hasn't tried mounting her. Is there anything we can or should do?

I have heard of this problem before. If he has never mated before and he is 7 yrs old, no wonder the poor guy's confused! Is the female experienced? I have read that it helps to use an experienced female the first time. Perhaps that will help. Good luck.

Is he gay? My bitch often tries mounting my male dog. They are both neutered!!! Obviously there are some crazy mixed up dogs out there.

Anniekon, I'm not surprised they are confused if you go around neutering them! I'd be bloody furious ;0)!
