A book to please 9 differing women??

I'm in a reading group and it's my turn to choose again. We've had a run of cr@p choices thanks to one of our number who is, shall we say, a born schoolmistress who likes to influence the choices as much as she can. I want to tell her, politely, that I've chosen already, thankyou. But I HAVEN'T!! Any suggestions for a cracking read? We're all women, we don't really do highbrow (despite her ^^ attempts) but we don't do "holiday reads" either. Our all time favourite so far has been "Time Traveller's Wife" as an idea of our level!

Any thoughts?? Please?!

what about angelas ashes, by Frank McCourt or Addict, By stephen Smith, that book will make them sit up and think, it certainly did me.

I've read Angela's Ashes, Ray, and I felt cold every time I picked it up to read. He had such a rotten childhood and always seemed so c c c cold - it's my lasting impression of the book! Haven't come across your other one though, so I'll add it to my list, thanks x

probably a bit late but I've just finished The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards.Basically it is about a happily married couple .Wife has twins delivered by the husband doctor. Second child,a girl, has down's syndrome , so he tells his wife she has died and asks the nurse to take the girl to an institution.
Lots to discuss and argue about I would have thought. Recommended by Jodi Picoult on the front cover.
Also The Island by Victoria Hislop Another Richard and Judy recommendation which I really enjoyed.
