I was staying in Icmeler in Turkey last month.
The neighbouring town Marmaris is very popular but Iam wondering of the origins of the word "marmaris".

We were told that the town was origionally just a palace which was being constructed, but the official (dont know who he was) decided that he didn't like the palace at all and so fired the architect, leaving the palace unfinished.

And so he named the town Marmaris, as apparently this translates as "Fire the architect" !

Has anyone else heard this?
Is it true or were we being told tall tales ??

Hi babybombo :o)

Bit of info here that is along the lines of what you were told with some details slightly different ....

Legend has it that Suleyman the Magnificent ordered the castle in Marmaris to be enlarged. He then travelled to Rhodes and upon his return found it was still too small for his liking and ordered his men to "mirmari" which means hang the architect!

We went to Bodrum for our honeymoon 8 years ago and visited Marmaris it's a lovely place, we had a great time :o)
