can some-one tell me if an employer can lawfully search my work locker and remove an item that they presume is theirs without me being present. i was not aware that locker searchers were being done, is this allowed the item was a hi-vis vest which i had purched myself

by law they can not search it without your permission!
if you do not give permission the police can if they feel you have shop lifted etc..

I don't know the legality of the locker search but if they have taken something that is yours and not theirs then surely this is theft. Do you have proof of purchase for this item? If so, I would be talking to my union rep pronto.
