I recently painted my cuboards, you do not need special paint but you must do the job properly.
1) Sand down to "key" the surface
2) At a careful coat of undercoat.
3) use normal gloss paint

I would suggest that you need to take the doors off and take you time.
I went off the 'International' brand of paints when I read on the tin that their 'Yacht Varnish' was 'not suitable for marine use'. I ask you!
i used easy surface prep liquid from b&q you dont have to sand with it - did my old kitchen and looked great just use a good quality gloss and an undercoat
