At 2340 on 14th April, 1912, Titanic struck an iceberg about 400 miles off Newfoundland, Canada. Her crew had been warned about icebergs several times that evening by other ships navigating through the same region. Captain Smith had ordered the ship to steam at top speed (21 knots). When she sailed into the iceberg, it grazed her side, ripping the mighty iron plates asunder and flooding the unsealed compartments within.

Less than three hours later, the Titanic plunged to the bottom of the sea, taking more than 1500 people with her.
