well, i should imagine their waiting for an oppotunity for some free food! in terms of migration patterns and blah blah blah etc, i wouldnt have a clue! but my best guess, their waiting/looking for food. after all, 99.9% of every animal that exists, does nothing other than look for food!

They are waiting for the tide to go out so that lots of yummie arthropods are accessible on the beach.
