Windows Media Player

i just put on media player to listen to some music and the following message appears:

'Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly.'

it was working perfect yesterday. any ideas as to what is wrong with it? thanks

Go to Start - My Computer

Click ' View System Information ' in the left hand pane.
Click the hardware tab - and click on 'sound, video and game controllers.

Click everything under that tab - the box will tell if everything is working fine. If it isn't, click 'troubleshoot' and hopefully that will resolve the problem.

If not, you could do a system restore to a date when it was working.

right click on the my computer icon on your desktop and select "manage"
In new window select "Device Manager"
Look for sound devices and click on the + sign
It is likely that your sound card will be displayed but with a exclamation mark against it.
Either way you should left click to highlight it.
Once highlighted right click and select uninstall and confirm you want this to happen.
Sound card will then dissapear from list.
Reboot pc and if all is well with the card windows will auto detect it and re -install the drivers for it...
