Our 2yr old English Springer Spaniel rescue dog chases lights and shadows to the extent of driving himself (and us) mad. Although fairly obedient indoors, he came to us with little to no outdoor training. Recall is not in his knowledge bank and he is agressive towards most (but not all) dogs he meets. All in all a very scared little dog. We have tried all the normal training methods of distraction etc. It is clearly obsessive compulsive behaviour and we are considering an animal behaviourist, but can they really help? If so can anyone recommend a good one as we don't want to waste our money on another unsuccesful try. (North East Surrey/west Kent area)
I wouldn't worry about it. Dogs are mad things, it's what makes them lovable. I had a dog who hated the sight of statues. She went berserk whenever she saw a statue and barked at it. It was hilarious.
My dog was the same when he was younger. Always chasing light, shaddows and peoples feet. Even now he has his mental moments so I really wouldn't worry. Just sounds playful and everything else comes with time, patients and sometimes some tough love.
My lab tries to catch light in her mouth if she sees a torch , a mirror sun light , or a light caught off a mobile phone , its so funny because she goes at it with such a soft mouth approach :-)
