Possible malaria??
2 Answers
My husband has just come back from a South African safari. (My 14 year old daughter also went) After about a week he started getting headaches, then feeling tired, loss of appetite, feeling a bit sick, sinusitis. Then at the end of the week he developed spots over his body in particular, his legs. They do not itch nor do they hurt. I know that there is some sort of "head cold" going about and i also had some of these symptoms which, apart from feeling tired, have almost gone for me, in about 4 days.
My daughter has not had anything. I have looked up the symptoms for malaria and although he has a lot of the symptoms, i can't find nothing about the spots. (Yes they do disappear when a glass is held on them!!) Can it be malaria? It is winter in South Africa and no one on the safari noticed any mosquito's. What else can it be? Don't tell me to send him to the doctors. He won't go, he's a man!

whereabouts in South Africa? The south is generally malaria-free (can't guarantee this, of course) but up by Kruger Park etc is much riskier. On the other hand, it's winter, as you say, and should be as safe as it gets. The spots may just be insect bites - I once found some after returning from a holiday, and suspect there were just bugs in the carpet on the plane. Maybe you could go and ask a chemist about his symptoms without initially involving your hsuband?
