"Growning" vegetables!!!!
Question Author
oops! lets hope the whole patch is "groaning" with produce by the spring
No matter how you spell it, these are some good, cool weather, end of summer crops:
Any variety of lettuce (our favortie this time of year is Arugula
Spinach
Radishes
Carrots (they may not get real big, but delicious)
Herbs (Basil grows rapidly if can get somesun) Rosemary and Thyme
Leeks and other members of the Onion family
Some vegetable, such as Kale, Broccoli and even cabbages can be planted in the late fall in your climate (not ours, since we see temperatures of -20F) for early spring harvest
Don't use commercial fertilizer for fall and winter gardens... use compost for overwintering plants (available in bags at most garden stores) and mulch them with peat moss, pine needles or bags of dead leaves.
Best of luck!
Sow broad beans in November.
I recommend a simple publication-Adam The Gardener- available from www.antiqbook.co.uk It gives ideas on week by week sowing ,planting and garden tasks. It is an old-fashioned publication but is excellent value.
I can also recommend the Expert Vegetable grower (or something like that) - the Expert range of books (By Dr Hessayon)are really good - I bought mine when I had an allotment and no experience and they were really good.
