I'd like to find a cheap software pacakag that would allow me to create newsletters, flyers, ads etc. Quark Xpress would do it, but I don't want to pay 1000 (and I don't need something that sophisticated). What's the best alternative? (PC not Mac)

Serif Page Plus and Draw Plus are very good - you can buy the software for as little as 50 but will have to pay extra for the manuals. It's one of those mailshot offers you get from time to time or sometimes see in the magazines.
If you go to kazaa.com or winmx.com and download the software you will be able to get almost any program song film etc you want FREE. You can usually get a cracked version of a program. I just downloaded Office XP and it works great!
whilst choi2000's suggestion might be a little bit too 'pro-software-piracy', he's right when mentioning Office XP. As a freelancer, I've found that for many of the simpler jobs, Word provides all the necessary tools and more. It helps avoid the need to both buy and learn a new software package.
