Alitalia bankruptcy. Buy ticket anyway?

I need to purchase a ticket with Alitalia for the xmas period as it is the cheapest by far, but I hear that they are going bankrupt. How long does this process take? If they cease to exist by xmas does it mean that I have lost my ticket? What if I buy travel insurance, would it cover the eventuality of bankruptcy?

I don't know the in's and out's of it, but personally if a company was about to go bankrupt I wouldn't deal with them. It's not worth the hassle! Plus if nearer the time the flight wasn't happening you'd then pay through the nose for another.

nobody really knows what's going to happen there but they are in a lot of financial trouble. It's quite possible someone may buy the whole airline, or maybe individual routes or planes, but personally I think Beads is right; I wouldn't be buying their tickets at the moment until their future is a lot clearer.
