I own a Renault Megane. Theres a red light showing on the dashboard. Ive looked at the manual and it says its the coolant temperature warning light. How do I fix it without taking it to a garage and getting conned?

Check that you have enough coolant,
under the bonnet most cars have marked any liquids the driver needs to top up with yellow caps, look for one with a warning sign that says "do not remove while the engine is hot" or words to that effect, there may even be a mark where the coolant level should be.
morning , the sensor for the light is normally located in the thermostate housing( which the top hose off the radiator goes on to) if you buy one from a renault dealer normally a tenner then it will help you identify it when you came to replace it ..

Thanks guys. When I take my car to the garage it comes out with more faults than when it went in. Usually.

Sorry. One more thing. Is engien coolant just tapwater?
No, you need to buy engine coolant - sometimes known as antifreeze - they will have it in halfords, your local petrol station or even in tesco - you need to dilute to the correct consistency depending on summer or winter. If you have nothing in there at all, put a bit of water in there to get you going, then get the proper coolant in asap.
Check under the hood, first check your radiator for leaks, if that is ok check all your hose connections for any leaks; If all that is well I would suggest you top up your expansion tank (usually located,I think to the left of the radiator). That's the only way I know of how to get some coolant back into the system. Once the system is circulating you will need to check again for any leaks, best I can do.Sorry.
you could always try putting water in the cooling system. no wonder garages would rip you off.
