For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.my mum was a single parent, and there was only me living at home still. i was more than happy to pay her 100 a month (a few years ago). and i always offered to help out with bills and did some of the food shopping. i knew it was hard for her (and all parents) and your kids shouldnt be taking you for a ride, they should want to help you out. they'll get a shock if they think 130 is a lot! they should try moving out, they'll pay that in council tax never mind rent!!
They didn't ask to be born but they are asking you to keep them in your house.
Compared to what I paid when I lived with my parents, that is very low! Going back a few years, I paid 150 a month, we worked out how much I could afford, taking in account of my car payments and how much i needed to live on etc and worked it out from there

This has been going on since time began! I can remember arguing with my mum back in the 1960s about 'keep money'. Like everything else it depends on circumstances - your income, their income, household outgoings. Above all fairness counts.
I told my children that their keep money would stay lowish (they thought ANY money was too much) while their pay was low. However, as soon as they started earning good money (so into their 20s) they should pay more. I didn't enforce this with my daughter as she was saving to buy her first home. My eldest son was thrown out so wasn't around for the increase and my youngest son had the threat hanging over his head until he moved in with his sister and then it became her problem.
So - there's no hard and fast answer, just what seems fair to all of you once you've all talked it through.
Just be fair!!!

The best thing to do, is say to them, okay, don't pay any rent, all you get is bed, their part will be to buy and cook their food themselves, allow them to use the iron after they come back from the Laudrette.
see how long it lasts, they'll soon realise what a bargain, and good parents they have.
I was in the Army, and this is what happened to my brother, lasted two weeks before he apologised and returned to the status quo.

I'm on my own with two children (well young adults then!) they are at home but going to university. I charge them 40 each per week. I divided the bills by three and came up with this figure. It's all in and I pay for everything. One of them complains about it and the other thinks its fair. You can't win!!
Have to agree with hotpink
Council Tax alone would amount to the small sum they are paying you.
What you charge them is far too low.
If they did not ask to be born and that is youngsters favourite argument, then you did not ask to keep them when they were old enough to go out to work. They have to be able to stand on their own two feet at some point in their lives.
Good Luck!

the same as ethel has said she used to have to pay a third of her money as keep i used to charge my daughter a third of her wages that then covered everything but if she wasn't home at meal times tough i didn't cook again at the time she complained it was too much. - however since she has left home and now pays everything for herself she often asks if she can come home and pay keep again she now knows how hard it really is. good luck
