Glasses Lense Dioptre?
2 Answers
I've been looking for some plain glass glasses to buy, just because I'd like to wear them now and then as an accessory. I've found a pair I really like but they are reading glasses, and the order form is asking for a 'dioptre' value between 1.5 and 3.5 - which do I select? I have no problem reading, I just want to wear them generally. I don't want to select the wrong lense and find I can't see anything while I'm just walking down the street!

For plain glass, you actually require a dioptre value of zero. Reading glasses have increasingly large (positive) dioptres the 'stronger' they get. So the nearest figure to zero, which you're offered, is 1.5
However, I doubt that you'll be able to see much through them. Many supermarkets and discount stores now sell reading glasses. Many of them have glasses which you can try on in the shop. Simply try on any pair of 1.5 dioptre reading glasses and find out how much you can see. I suspect that it will be very little.

Have a look at the glassescrafter website. I just bought a pair of Police glasses which should be at least 185 for 50. I asked for plain glass because my optician said she' glaze them for me (she doesn't sell Police glasses and there was a pair I particularly wanted) so the company waived the postage. The firm is in the USA but the glasses came from China.
