What sort of driving were you doing when it went right up?
Cruising on a motorway? Sitting in car park queue in bright sunshine?

Have you checked that there is plenty of coolant in the cooling system?

No wasnt on the motorway - was just driving normally in town! today when it eventually started the temperature was still up.
faulty coolant temp sensor maybe. this sensor sends a signal to the ecu as to how much fuel the engine needs to run. it may not start if the sender is signalling that the engine is warm when in faqct its cold so therefore not getting enough fule to start the engine from cold.

Thank you will check that - can i just top up the coolant like the water and oil?
Don't open the cooling system when the engine has been running as it will be pressurised, and you could scald yourself.

When it is cool check if it is below minimum, and if so top up with anti freeze.

Ok thanks - havent moved the car since 9 this morning - i dont want to put it in the wrong place. There is my screenwash and oil, then one more lid that comes off - this used to have some red liquid in there - is this where i should put coolant in?
Red liquid could be power steering oil. Don't put it in there!

There should be a transparent bottle with a yellow lid at the back of the engine compartment.

On the side it should have a Min marker half way up.

If you are not sure, get someone who knows a bit to help you. If you put stuff in the wrong place it will cost you a lot.

It is a transparent container with a yellow lid - i got the man in the office to take a look! He thinks it's that one - it has high pressure on the lid too! Cheers for your help! x

Ok we filled the container up with water and coolant, but it was empty by the time i got home - it seems to have stopped the tempereature going up - but this morning after about 3 or 4 miles the orange light on the dash came on (engine light, i think) I've heard someone else talk about this problem - does it sound like could be an air filter?
Thanks

You need a professional to have a look at your car.
