I beleive this is made with eggs and bread is dipped into it and fried in a pan (recipe is in Kramer vs Kramer. My Brother In Law reckons French Toast is bread toasted on one side only. Is my version an Americanism (if you can have an Americansim of something French) - I know that French fries refers to the WAY of cooking (ie thinly cut and deep fried) as opposed to chips. Any advice?

I make French toast - or "eggy bread" by toasting white bread, then dipping it into a couple of whisked eggs. The bread is then fried in a hot pan with a small amount of oil & a knob of butter. Best served with lashings of tomato ketchup. I have also had French toast in a couple of restaurants - in different countries - and it is always served like this, so I think you are correct.
My 'eggy bread' was made in the same way as scubadiver - but we served it on the crispy side and spread with marmalade.
Your brother-in-law is wrong, he's thinking of Melba Toast. MY French toast is bread dipped in beaten and seasoned egg with a little milk and fried in frying pan and served with bacon and sausage. Americans have icing sugar on theirs.
I concur with the above on French toast. We also called it gypsy toast for some reason.
Actually you are all mistaken. It is not toasted beforehand, but may be toasted slightly under a grill after frying. Americans have it with syrup. Even MacDonalds serve it there.
Sorry apricot and boognish76. I agree with both of you as well.
melba toast is a slice of bread toasted on each side, then cut through the middle and toasted again.it can be stored in a airtight tin to use with soups or just buttered.i think it was invented for dame melba, opera singer?
I'd just call your French toast eggy bread, and like your brother in law I'd say French toast is toast toasted on one side -- but then the bread side spread with lots of butter. Eggy bread is good with a little Marmite -- I don't toast it first. Icing sugar though -- ugh! Not sure about marmalade -- I'll have to try that. (Incidentally, I think Marmite and marmalade do go well on toast together) All in all, it looks to me as if there is not one "correct" French toast.
"French Toast" at our farm in US is usually white bread dipped in egg mixture then fried in small amount of oil. Best recipe is: 2 Eggs (whole)whipped with 1/4 cup cream, 1 tabelspoon cornstarch, 2 tbsp. sugar, 1/2 tsp. cinnamon )ground). Mix together, whipping until slightly bubbly. Slice French bread (we actualy prefer sour dough bread)about 1 inch thick. Heat 1 tbsp. oil in skillet (cast iron best). Dip bread, but not for long (shouldn't be soggy). Fry unitl brown on both sides. Then place on rack in 350 deg F. oven until tops turn bubbly. Serve with warm butter and warm real maple syrup. Also can accompany with warm molasses mixed with small amount of honey to sweeten. We enjoy a side of thick sliced bacon or country ham. Ummmmm!
Where I am from bread dipped in egg - is eggy bread
Clanad, that's exactly how I make french toast, minus the cornstarch - I will add that next time and see how it is. Never heard the term "eggy bread" for that.
Oops, and not white bread - usually, sourdough or challah.
