I stayed in Quuenstown and got we got bussed up to the slopes at dawn (ie when we got in from the pub). Truly excellent holiday, great food, drink, skiing was ok. It was a friend's birthday, so we hired a helicopter to pick us up off the slopes, have a champagne breakfast in the middle of nowhere, then take us snowmobiling on top of a mountain before flying over town. Simply stunning day out, and not as insanely expensive as you would think.
We had a skiing trip to NZ four years ago and I can recommend the spot. We stayed at a place called Mountain Heights Lodge (B&B) which is handy for the skiing both Whakapapa and Turoa. I know it's changed hands since we were there (it was friends of ours who owned it at the time) so I can't comment on the standard of the food etc. I'm rubbish at posting links but I'm sure if you google it you'll find their website.
