I watched a programme last night on one of the BBC channels, it was about British Comics mainly the Dandy and Beano,

Is this going to be a series, and will it include other comics such as Film Fun and Radio Fun?

apparently not.

Maybe it's because none of the people who created them are left alive to interview. Maybe it's just because they're so ignorant they think comics began with the Beano, the way film fans think movies began with Star Wars.
Love Film Fun and Radio Fun.

What were your favourite comics and your favourite characters?
Rupert, I think. I loved the way he used to tour the world with the aid of conjurors, imps and so forth - very rich fantasy stories, rather underappreciated. We didn't have the Express so I only saw the annuals, But I loved them. I'm too young to remember the stories by Mary Tourtel, who invented him, but the work of Alfred Bestall, who came along later, is superb.

Yes jno I also thought Rupert superb, and I would receive a Rupert Annual in my Christmas Stocking every year.

There was something about the smell of a new Rupert Annual that no other annual seemed to have. I wish I still had them.
Blimey I used to get the lot - Bunty , Judy , Diana , School Friend , Beezer , Beano , Dandy , the Topper plus occasional Buster. I always maintain they might seem frivolous but they are a great aid to learning to read.

I was too young for Film and Radio Fun at the time but have grown to love them as I've got older and have several of the annuals.
