cant open latest msn messenger. Can you help?

Please help! I am trying to enter msn messenger but first it says I must download the latest version. When I download it then click on "run" the programme, I get this popup message:

"Windows live messenger has failed with setup error code '1601'"
So I have attempted to remove my version of messenger instead in order to reinstall it to see if this fixes the problem. It wont allow me to remove it! It says:
"The Windows Installer service could not be accessed. This can ocurr if you are running windows in safe mode, or if the window installer is not correctly installed".
Can someone help sort this out?

Hi, error cxode 1601, suggests that windows installer is damaged.
To fix it, click Start, then Run, and type the following:
%systemroot%\system32\msiexec.exe /regserver
then click OK.

Then try again, post back how you get on.

Wix- I have tried what you suggested. I still get the same message when I try to run messenger so nope, didnt work.
Looks like im gonna have to fork out some money to get someone in to check whats wrong and fix it.

I have had this problem for a few weeks now- I cannot run any new programme nor does it allow me to remove anything from my pc. Also when I insert a blank cd in to burn photos onto it for example, the driver does not recognise it and says that there is no disc inside.

Society- I cannot remove msn. It wont let me

Wix-thanks for your help. Can you help me out with the link that you have sent me? Im stuck on step 3 c.
I have found Msiexec but then what do I have to do? How do I note the location path? Sorry im not a techie expert :(
