Watching the terrible pictures on the news of starving children and 80% unemployment rates, etc, what exactly IS Robert Mugabe hoping to achieve by torturing his own people? Is it some form of ethnic cleansing? I don't understand what his distorted, long-term vision for Zimbabwe is? Perhaps someone could enlighten me?

Thanks in advance

You assume Mugabe actually cares about the Zimbabwean people or that he has a long-term vision. The country has fallen into disrepair since he gained power, with an inflation rate fast approaching 1,500,000%. It's jaw dropping. It will continue to fall into this economic abyss until someone better than him comes along, which quite frankly makes the future bleak. Even given the impossible scenario of all the great western politicians and economists taking over the country's government I think it would be very difficult to reverse the damage done by ZANU-PF.

So why does he carry on doing the job at all? It would seem he profits nicely from it, living a life of luxury compared to his citizens, his cohorts much the same (just look at the illegally obtained 3,500 acre farm his vice president, Joyce Mujuru, lives on). For him and his party things are pretty peachy, at least if he remains within the borders of Zimbabwe.
actually, Zimbabwe has run on a reasonably even keel for most of his time in power, even though it's suffered through some terrible droughts that were none of his fault. It's just over the last 5 years or so he seems to have come over all tyrannical.
He needs removing asap. I wonder if Zimbabwe was full of oil,
would the USA have invaded the country ?
Hes hoping to line his pockets. Until the time comes when his people turn on him and the country collapses into civil war and then he'll leg it just like every other crackpot dictator has done in the past.
The majority of zimbabweans got what they wanted on 17th April 1980 the day of Zimbabwean Independence. They were not ready or able to control what was once a beautiful Country Rhodesia.
