USB Confusion

After introducing a new Canon printer to my lap top, I am continually being advised to install a 'High Speed USB Host Controller'. I have visited 3 stores, including Maplin, but they seem as confused as I am, by the words 'Host Controller'. Any enlightenment would be welcome, as would information on what exactly to look for and ask for. The printer is slow but it does the job.
Thank you.

Many thanks. The laptop is a Toshiba SP6000 and has Windows XP (SP2) installed. I'm running the printer, mouse and broadband modem (Sagem) via a high speed 4 port USB hub. That's about the sum total of my computer knowledge.

the sat pro 6000 has usb1

that means the max connection speed is 12Mb/s
usb 2 = 480Mb/s
both standards are compatible .... so things should work ok - just slower

if it's an option you could buy something like this
http://uk.insight.com/apps/productpresentation /index.php?product_id=NLKNLUSB07&cm_mmc=Froogl e-_-NM-_-NLK-_-NLKNLUSB07&src=FRO1

which will give you usb2
