reinstallation of PC
5 Answers
Last week I asked a question here about a windows messenger error that I kept getting (code 1601) when I attempted to install the latest version.
I received a lot of help from NEILDOWNX
who ultimately recommended that I perform a recovery on it, however, I cannot find the CD to make a recovery.
HOWEVER, I have found some cds at work that may be useful:
Windows XP Professional 2004 service pack (with the keys included)
Dell Computer operating system reinstallation dvd windows vista home basic
Dell Drivers and utilities for reinstalling dell dimension computer software DVD
My computer is an acer aspire. It says on the cds "This software is already installed on your computer. Only use this dvd to reinstall the operating system on a Dell PC".
Im confused about it all!

What version of Windows are you using? XP or Vista?
The 1601 error is probably due to the Windows Installer service being stopped. Think of this as the part of the operating system that allows you to run installation programs.
neildownx previously gave you some instructions on how to re-start the service.
If you're using XP
Click Start -> Control Panel -> Performance and Maintenance -> Administrative Tools -> Services
Towards the bottom of the screen you'll see 'Windows Installer'. What does it say under the 'Status' and 'Startup type' columns?
Try starting the service. Right-click 'Windows Installer' and select 'Start'. The 'Status' column should change to 'Started'.
Try installing Messenger now. You may get a 1603 error, but that'll be a different problem.
