Town twinning?

Hi All... What is the reason for towns being twinned with european towns please? There was only one other related question posted on here and that didn`t have any info. Thanks

I think it is mainly a method of comradeship following WW2. See link for more info:

My favourite is Ashford in Kent. It's twinned with a place with the best name ever; 'Bad Munstereifel' in Germany.

Some would say that its a vehicle for local councillors to get a free annual holiday... Having said that I have seen some one horse towns that some places have picked and I guess 'new europe' has some pretty bleak places looking to twin up.

I was on a town-twinning committee in Surrey, where we used to live and I'd agree that they can be very good for international relations. As for councillors getting a freebie holiday - we had to pay for our trips, although our German hosts wouldn't let us pay for anything while we were there! Of course, the favour was returned when they came over to see us. The twinning created links between our schools, businesses, even the local police in both towns and it was great fun, too. Lots of people forged lasting friendships. K

I too have been involved in town twinning and always paid for the travel or drove, its original belief was that you wouldnt want to risk killing someone from a town you were twinned with
