Where to stay in Madrid

I am trying to book a weekend in Madrid as a present for my wife. I see lots of hotels but am not sure where to stay. Is there a particular area I should head for; say like the Ramblas in Barcelona.

Booking today to meet a deadline. Early feedback will be appreciated.

Had a long weekend in Madrid a couple of years ago there is a hotel close to the airport struggling to think of the name make sure you visit the Prado musuem its fabulous

Try looking up Madridman on Google. He has a great site for Spanish cities. Look at Hostales for some great places at low prices.
