Gelatine is an unacceptable product to vegetarians as it is a by-product of the slaughterhouse industry, being made of protein derived from animal bones, cartilage, tendons and other tissues such as pig skin. Isinglass, used in fining some alcoholic drinks, is a type of gelatine from the air bladders of certain kinds of fish. Aspic is also unsuitable, as it is made from clarified meat, fish or vegetable stocks and gelatine. However, there are various alternatives available, which do not contain any animal products whatsoever. These include agar agar, carrageen and a proprietary product called Gelozone. I recently found out marshmellows contain gelatine :-( I was most disappointed as i'm going to have to add it to my "do not eat" foods list
I just love jelly, but my husband always makes a point of reminding me what it is made of! I dread to think of what other foods have gelatine in them. I try not to think about it too much, as I'm on the verge of becoming a vegetarian, but then manage to put it off a little longer!
Sam172, www.veganstore.co.uk sell gelatin-free marshmallows, stocks are always limited but worth trying to get hold of some. And smudge, loads of makes of jelly are now gelatin-free like the Rowntree ready-to-eat pots.
Thank you nicola_red, guess what I shall be buying from now on? Yummy!

Asda and the likes sell them, and you can't tell the difference.
Thank you spainlads, I shall be popping to Asda later for a few bits, so I'll look out for them.
>> ...makes a point of reminding me what it is made of! I dread to think of what other foods have gelatine in them. << Are boiled up bones somehow 'worse' than half a leg or a slab of shoulder muscle then?

Gelatine is the result of mating a tub of hair gel with a spoon full of Ovaltine. Simple.
