I have just inherited a piece of oak furniture which came from a house where the lady smoked very heavily, therefore the furniture stinks!! Please tell me what is the best way to get rid of the smell?

Baking soda would probably be best. (Saw this on Kim and Aggie's show a few times!) Dissolve a spoonful in warm water and rub all over the furniture with a damp cloth then wipe with a dry cloth. If you use beeswax polish afterwards, it should smell nice!
a simple solution of soapy water a couple of times and a good rinse down will do the trick....dont forget to polish afterwards...lovely smelling furniture
