i want to but a small business and can afford to invest (with a bank loan about 10 to 12,0000. i am a single mother with two children and need to earn more than i am currently earning and i feel that being self employed would enable me to do this. any advice would be welcome

wht buy a business? why not start you own? or find someone established and buy a partnership? What sort of business do you want to be in?
