My mechanic says no because its a saloon, unless I can get a kit specific to my car, which he has not heard of. It would involve connecting the washer bottle as well. I have an L reg Rover 623gsi. Can it be done by an auto electrician? Anyone got any ideas? The rear screen is difficult to see through when it is wet or dirty.

yes it can be done but its a lot of work and would cost quite a bit as you have to run a pipe to the bottkle and run wires for the electrics, could cost 200 or more, not really worth it on a old rover.
hello johnny.yes this is along standing problem with saloon cars of having a rain created dirty rear window and being unable to clean.when we used jaguar xj's as motorway patrol cars these were fitted with rear wipers to improve visability at what i remember was a very high cost but proved invaluable.at the time i believe ford had a rear wiper on its orion saloon model.may still be available as a kit spare, but as it involved drilling the glass its a difficult and expensive job poss as much as the car is worth.
Suggest you just do a wiper without the wash. Try looking a an old Land Rover with the wiper arm connected directly to the motor spindle, We used to fit these by drilling thru the bodywork just below (or above) the glass, its really simple and just needs a cable and switch to operate. Surely if you looked at the set up on the back of something like a people carrier it would be compatible, just dont fix it thru the glass. Take a walk roung your local scrap yard and you will find some inspiration!
