My great great grandfather (maybe another great!) was born in Shankill Armagh in 1817 and joined up with the British Army before he came over to England. How can I find out where and when he joined up? Without going to Ireland that is.

Hiya, i keep coming back to this question and pondering the possible research sources, can you tell me what information you already have that has led you to the army connection and the birth place? The early English census returns (1841-1881) stated country of birth only, it was 1891 before more exact places were included

thanks Dot - he was born in Shankill, which was a suburb of Lurgan, Armagh. The first census I am sure of is 1851, where he is down as patrick Magone, and living in the barracks at Chatham. He then goes to Newark. he was married to Ann Ellen Attenborough and all their children were born in England. he was from Derbyshire. He was in the Royal Notts Militia I think. I would like to discover when he left Ireland, but would really like to discover a previous relative! Any advice gratefully received.
Ok I have looked at my guides for researching Irish Genealogy and for Co Armagh in the early 1800s there are Pigot directories, which are dated 1820 and 1824 and cover Armagh, Blackwatertown,Lutgan, Portadown anmd Tandtagee. there is a bradshaws general directory of Armagh. Lurgan,Markethill, Porterdown and Tandragee dated 1819. These are in Armagh Public Library.

I added the list of other sources from rootsweb.

This is a link to a site where you can view the pages of the Pigots directory for armagh 1824.
