Hot water from cold tap?

I am getting hot water from my cold water taps - does anyone know how this can happen?

Has someone swapped around the labels or blue/red indicators as a prank?

If you mean for just a few seconds soon after you run it, it can happen if the cold water supply system passes through a warm place (airing cupboard?). Over a few hours, the water in the pipe around the 'warm source' will pass some heat into the cold water.

No, it's not for a few seconds and the water is quite hot, not just warm. This wouldn't explain why it has suddenly happened in the past couple of days either..

Is this the same for all cold water taps in your property or just one particular tap?

On reflection,because it is common to all your cold water taps it would appear that there is some sort of changeover valve in the boiler that is stuck in one position.

Realizing there are probably differences in plumbing between the U.K. and here in the U.S., there is no interconnection between hot and cold water systems. My guess is that someone has worked on the system and hooked it up backwards. In our system, there's really no other explanation. Here, the main water system enters the house in one supply pipe, enters a "T", one side of which goes to the hot water heater and the other side serves all of the various outlets, toilets, etc. The hot water comes only from the heater and has no access to the cold water pipes...

It works the same way in the UK, Clanad.
So, Lass, does this happen to every cold tap including the cold tap at the kitchen sink? And what method have you got for heating your water? And have you changed anything when it started happening - like, have you just put the CH on?
