There is an actual episode where the kids do get back to their time but Venger or his monsters have followed them there so they have to go back.

they did get home but the episode was never shown as the network pulled the plug on the series before it had chance to be aired

all of dungeons and dragons is available on dvd(i have them). yes they did a few times but had to return to the realm for various reasons. eg eric being turned into a frog-man.
