Urgent! Ink cartridge

If I buy a colour ink cartridge for my printer, will it print black text ??

Every ink cartridge printer I've ever seen has a triple colour cartridge for colour combinations and a big black cartridge because more is used than anything else.
In theory by combining the 3 colours you get black, but the printer will want to force the use of a black cartridge to print black.
So I don't think it will work.

i just have the one cartridge in my printer and it prints all colours

It does depend on the model of printer, I have an epson which has 4 separate cartridges, 3 x colours (Red, cyan,. magenta) and 1 x black, however if the black is empty the others do combine to print in black .(as would any printer that just has one colour and one black cartridge) - but its not "jet" black when it prints out.

Worth checking the usual set up fof the cartridges,

The older models used to use 1 cartridge for both colour and black and white but it is more economical to use 2 cartiridges as the more modern printers do.

Mines the same as yours alunrw, epson with four cartridges.

We just bought a black cartridge but I'll need to get a coloured one soon anyway.
It was to print of a CV so jet black was probably best for that type of text.
