but it really was The story of O which has disturbed me more than any other book. I don't know why I should react so extremely but I felt that my mind had been polluted. It is a dreadful,tragic story of abuse. In fact, I read it again at a five-year interval to reassess, felt even worse and destroyed the book ! Sorry about that
Tess of the D'Urbervilles upset me too, although obviously the gory details aren't in that one!!
