Do the Royal Family need our money?
This prob isn't the right category, but wasn't sure where to put it - the question about the queen giving evidence reminded me how much I despise the royal family. I personally think they serve no purpose, however I know many people disagree - lots of people give the 'they're good for tourism' argument. My question is though - the Royal Family have oodles of their own cash, they live in properties they don't own for free, and yet we still give them 60m a year. I don't understand how the queen can sleep at night - she doesn't need this money, but she is quite happy to take it from the tax payer (think of the good this money could do to say one hospital). Whether you like the royal family or not - surely no-one can really believe they need this money and it is right they receive it? I realise they 'work' for it - but they don't need it! Why couldn't we keep the royal family, let them live in the palaces for free, but stop giving them money?? It makes me sick just thinking about them!!! Anyone agree?

The Ulrika one really shocked me too.
I have to say, I felt really sorry for John Lesley after that.
It was like when my sister grassed me up to my mum, telling her that I'd eaten half a cheesecake one Sunday afternoon, when it wasn't me.
Still, I got my revenge years later when I 'accidentally' let it slip to my mum when my sister got pregnant at the age of 16.
Har har har.

Well looks like I am alone here but I want to keep the Royal Family, and I get a sense of pride when I see the history behind our culture and the standards we have. The money from the tax payer does keep it all going but how much does someone like the President of America take to keep all his entourage going ? One day when its all gone we may wonder if we did the right thing.
Income from the Crown Estate goes into the Treasury approx 185m a year. They get a proportion of this back through the Civil List and Grants in Aid from the Government. Effectively, we dont really pay for them although some money goes back to them from the treasury which we also contribute to. But then we get something back to, in the form of education, healthcare, benefits system etc etc. Admittedly a nice cheque for 35m wouldnt go amiss, but then I dont have to manage the crown budgets and keep royal palaces out of the red.
If we got rid of the queen et al then the Crown Estate would be dissolved amongst various land owners and developers and our treasury would end up with a 185m shortfall year on year which would be going to individual pockets and corporate profit margins rather than public coffers.
Thankfully the seminal contents of my pillow and sheets are not of much interest to anyone particular.
