Being obese is probably the main cause of it.It basically means you stop breathing for varying amounts of time when asleep,it can cause heart problems.
This is quite informative - scroll down to the causes:

I haven't read the details, but I am certainly no obese and i suffer from this condition.

It does cause me to stop breathing several dozen times a night - the net result is that my heart goes into overdrive to re-start my breathing, which is risky, because it does put a strain on the heart.

I am obviously unaware of this, but it does mean that I never ever feel rested and refreshed after sleeping, and I am constantly tired, and can sleep anywhere, any time.

I have had my tonsils and half my soft palette removed in an attempt to cure the condition - which has not been successful.

I have learned to live with it. My wife and I have separate bedrooms because she has ME and is a sseriously restless sleeper, so between us we never get any rest together.

On holiday, when we do share a room I have a moulded device similar to a mouth guard which re-aligns my jaw and cuts out the majority of my horrendous snoring.

As I say, I have learned to acceopt it - but lord help me if I ever have to start a new relationship!
