A banker's draft is the common alternative - a cheque drawn on the bank or building society, not on your account. They transfer your money out of your account first. However, there have been cases of bankers drafts not being honoured in certain complicated transactions. BDs are commonly used when paying for a car.
Thanks NoGoodBoyo.
I am actually the one selling my car.
I assume, from what you say, that I should ask for a guaranteed bankers draft (or cash of course).

dwl - even with these methods, people get stung. If I was in your position, I wouldn't let go of the vehicle until the cash or bd had been accepted by the bank (to ensure they are not counterfeit).
