Waste Disposal

Hi all, hope you can help with some suggestions. Out kitchen waste disposal in is full working order but has recently become very smelly (like an old drain - yuckky!!), not nice in a kitchen. Tried all proprietary cleaners which haven't worked, bleach and disinfectant just mask it. So any ideas please before I have to spend a fortune and call a plumber in? Thanks.

Absolutely! First, place several tablespoons of bicarb of soda down the disposal. Allow, add a bit of hot water and let it sit. Bicarb is a natural deoderant and also works being left in your fridge to catch odours.

If this fails to work, the next step is what I call 'flossing.'

Buy at boots a small packet of Borax. Drop the borax in the disposal, but rather than using hot water, this time empty several trays of ice cubes into the unit. I suspect what you're encountering is having food items becoming caked beneath the rotor blades...and possibly caking at the lip directly beneath the sink. This should clear it out beautifully. Once you've done that, I've always found a few lemons help sanitise and freshen the unit beautifully...failing that, use some lemon flash..

Thanks VV. Tried the bicarb recently, so I'll get some borax on Monday and try that. Lemons is an excellent idea. Cheers.

Yep, as above my solution - coffee grounds are good at getting into the macerating rings to de- gunk too. Don't forget to cut the lemons in half or they bounce about to little effect but make a load of noise. I have dipped the lemons on a saucer of bicarb to coat them before grinding too. Good luck.

Please don�t forget about the ice cubes. It plays an essential part of the process, causing the UFO�s (unidentified food objects) to flake off. It also serves to prevent the lemon peel from adding itself to the already caked on mess.
