Funnily enough, my grandmother swears by Astral, and for someone in her 80's she has a wonderful skin, so there you are, but a lot of it's to do with genes. Without surgery, you'll never make a silk purse out of a sow's ear!
hi ice maiden your right about feeling good when u use expensive cream on your face for some reason it feels smoother and fresher! but on the other hand (or cheek) weeals right as well; astral is a wicked cheapie and although i have expensive lotions and potions, i love to use astral when my face feels really dry. would you believe though i could n"t use astral when i was pregnant as it brought me out in a horrible rash!!! the minute (not quite!!!) i had the baby i tried it again and hey presto- no rash!

It's usually the ingredients in face creams that determine whether you can use cheap and cheerful or expensive. I say usually because I started with Clarins, but that inflamed my skin, continued with Clinique - and ended up at the Drs with beyond soreness, awful stuff (on me, that is). Now I use Estee Lauder or Lancome which are calming and do the job without any grease.
I really envy women who can get away with using Nivea, Ponds or Astral or even the Body Shop (another killer on me) but in the end it's what suits your skin - and so called expensive creams are not really, as you only use such a small amount.

Hi Hussy - yes, I agree with you that it's basically a case of finding which product suits you personally. I had a similar thing to yours happen when I was pregnant. I couldn't use E45 because my face went red and blotchy. I like Lancome and Estee Lauder, and Harrods also do a nice beauty range. You might pay a bit more, but the stuff lasts for ages, so it probably works out about the same as buying a cheapie in the first place.
I started using nivea when I was 11, as I had dry skin, I think it is when you start using them and not what they are tha does the trick. My skin is lovely and always has been. I use whatever that have reduced in the factory shop, now I have elizabeth Arden simple...4 and Nine Ricci skin illuminator from TJ hughes for 10.
If my skin goes really dry I use one from Lush
As i've aged i've become a bit of a cheap skate.
