Injured mouse

Hello,
My cat caught a mouse yesterday and I managed to rescue it. The poor little thing cannot walk properly as it has injured its leg. I have put it in a box out of reach from said cat, but I am not sure what to do with it. I don't want to prolong its agony, but if I put it outside it will be a sitting target as it can't walk. It has survived the night which i didn't think it would. He had some water, but not food. Will he heal? Many Thanks

let your cat finish him off, hes dead really! he will not recover, be brutal but kind

This is something that I have had to explain to my daughter since moving to the country. They will not survive, if nothing else they will die of shock.

As mentioned above it will more than likely die of shock anyway, but to give it a slight chance I'd release it back outside again, just somewhere relatively safe from predators like your cat.

Please don't do as the first person mentioned and give it back to your cat- that's horrible!

why not! its going to die more slowly if not, my cat kills them really quickly, then i dispose of them by flicking them out the front door to fertilize the shrubs. i`m not a nasty person ut lets get real here! its a half dead rodent.

I did consider leaving it, but the poor thing can't walk at all - it just rolls around. Unfortunately my cat is not like your cat, she keeps them alive as long as possible so she can play with them. I just thought it might be better for it to die somewhere warm and quiet.

I had a simular situation to you last month 1 of my cats caught a bird, and it was not dead but i new it would not survive due to its injuries i asked all my neighbours to help me out and to kill it but grown men couldnt do it, So i did the kindest thing for it, it invoived a spade, very quickly the bird did not know, and it was no longer suffering, Dont give it the cat, to prolong its suffering, people may object to what i did but it was the kindest thing,

Hi - don't know if the little mouse survived... but if it has there are lots you can do. I have saved many a mouse, some badly injured. As there metabolism is so fast they can mend very quickly. Visit the 'www.allaboutmice.co.uk' website, which is full of useful info. Also the vet wil help - I believe they have to treat all wild animals free of charge, but check re charges first. Another option is to contact a animal rescue (RAC will give you your local tel numbers) who will take it in for you, but check if they will take mice in. Regarding food .. put fresh water, nuts, grass, porriage oats, rice crispies or weatabix etc. I wouldn't let anything suffer, but the poor little thing deserves a chance and as I said I have had some injured mice that have shocked me at how fast they have got better, but even if it does die, you will have done your best and gave it a chance and a quiet warm place. sorry to sound harsh, i love animals but i have to agree with spottychops on this one, i used to try and rescue prey from my cat, if its a bird i still would, but to be honest the chances of survival aren't great, cos they've usually been too badly mauled by the time your beloved cat presents you with its generous gift!
btw, i found a dead rat in the garden the other day (courtesy of The Hunter) don't know about you, but i'm not sure that if it had been alive i would willingly provide it with free b&b!
