Oxford Street: Can anyone suggest a nice coffee shop / place for light lunch, where I can meet a friend for a good natter, nice ambience and watching the world go by ?

As you will be near the centre of one of the busiest cities in the world I'm sure you'll find somewhere lol
Why not try actually inside Selfridges. There are quite a few eating places/bars in the shop on various floors.

Within the food supermarket area at the side of the store nearest to Marble Arch there are a couple of sandwich bar areas.

Gordons bar (in Menswear area) is really nice, do things like mezze and italian platters.
Have a look a this link, shows all of the eateries in Selfridges

There's also a Wagamama on the road behind the store (Wigmore St, I think).
I agree - St Christopher's place is definitely the place (no pun intended!) to go. If you can afford to splash the cash then Claridges on Brook Street (kind of parallel with Selfridges) do a nice afternoon tea.
