Silly song from 70s

Can anyone place this?

It may have been a remake of a 30's song but I remember it probably in the 70's and the first 2 lines contained something silly like

'your bald spot catches my eye'
' ....close cover before striking...'

The lead crooned in the style of 1920/30s radio show and I think that half way through, the singer and orchestra faded and the voice of a radio announcer spoke over the music.

I heard snatches of it in the background of a recent Midsomer Murders episode and the tune keeps coming back to me ever since but I can't remember the full lyric or titlle.

I have tried google and there are lots of reference to 'close cover before striking' but it usually links to safety matches or a recent recording by Luna and the one I am thinking of is at least 30 years ago.
