You can do 3 units for each subject in each year.
If you decide to stop a subject at the end of one year you get an AS qualification.
Or you can continue and do the next 3 units, an A2, in your second year. The AS and A2 together make your A'level.
It depends how clever/dedicated you are as to how many you do. Some people do say 3 or 4 ASs and drop one subject and do 2 or 3 A2s.
